First round action is underway in Cologne, Germany where Pandemic's World of Warcraft squad faces off against the top 8 teams from the United States in the American Regional Finals of Blizzard's annual showcase tournament.
Unlike most other professional gaming events, Blizzard's uses a true competitor's format much like that of the U.S. Open (golf). Literally anyone can sign up to compete, and players are given an opportunity over the span of a two-month period in which to play games online against the best of the best. When the smoke clears, these top 8 teams are left standing, and they advance all-expenses paid to the next stage.
The top two teams from the US Regional this weekend will advance to play against the top two teams from the European Regional (also being held alongside this event) in a $200,000 grand finals matchup held annually at BlizzCON.
In short, not only is this event the most grueling and testing, but the most rewarding -- as it should be.
